The Capsules clash with the Clowns (2019)

Kaneda leads his Capsules against the Clowns in the middle of a violent rally. Tetsuo, his best friend, crashes his motorcycle into an escaped esper, and the night turns into a chase that pulls both of them into a government secret.

Set in Neo-Tokyo streets — A rally-filled street in Neo-Tokyo where Kaneda's gang fights the rival Clowns.

Neo-Tokyo is the rebuilt city of 2019, a place of protests, terrorism and gang violence.

Kaneda meets Kei (2019)

Arrested with the Capsules, Kaneda is questioned by the police and meets Kei, an activist in the resistance. He tricks the authorities into releasing her along with his gang.

Set in Police interrogation room — A police interrogation room in Neo-Tokyo.

The scene shows how little the police and the army trust each other.

The secret government laboratory (2019)

Colonel Shikishima and Doctor Ōnishi find that Tetsuo's abilities match those of Akira. The Colonel sees a boy he cannot control and begins to fear what he might do.

Set in Secret government facility — A government research facility run by the military.

A closed site where the espers are kept and studied.

Tetsuo's hospital (2019)

Tetsuo escapes the hospital, steals Kaneda's motorcycle and tries to flee the city with Kaori. After the Clowns ambush them he comes back with headaches and hallucinations. Later the resistance breaks in to rescue him.

Set in Hospital in Neo-Tokyo — The military hospital where Tetsuo is treated and watched.

A hospital that is part clinic, part cell for the espers.

The council that will not listen (2019)

Esper Kiyoko warns of the city's destruction, but Neo-Tokyo's parliament dismisses Shikishima's concerns. The Colonel is left with only one option he can think of, to deal with Tetsuo himself.

Set in Neo-Tokyo parliament — The chamber of Neo-Tokyo's executive council.

Shows the city's leaders as quarrelling politicians.

Harukiya Bar (2019)

Tetsuo confronts Kaneda's gangmates Yamagata and Kai over Kaneda's bike. When Yamagata protests, Tetsuo kills him. Kai carries the news to Kaneda, who vows to avenge his friend.

Set in Harukiya Bar — The Capsules' former hangout.

A small bar that serves as the gang's home ground.

The Olympic construction site (2019)

Tetsuo rampages through Neo-Tokyo toward the stadium. Kei fights him there, while Kaneda and the Colonel try to stop him. What they find under the site changes what everyone thought Akira was.

Set in Olympic stadium construction site — The unfinished Olympic stadium, with the cryonic storage beneath it.

A stadium for the next year's Olympics, built over an underground facility.
