Batman (1989)

Where Batman says it takes place, and where it was really shot.

Gotham is not a real city: its streets were a Pinewood backlot, its Wayne Manor was a Hertfordshire house, and its chemical plant was a London power station

Scenes and places

The night streets of Gotham (1989)

Street thugs argue over whether the Bat is real; a few minutes later Batman drops one of them and orders him to tell his friends. The city's fear of a masked figure is what the rest of the film feeds on.

Set in Gotham City streets — The rain-dark streets where muggers meet a rumor.

Gotham City is invented; the film's version was a full street set built from scratch.

Filmed at Pinewood Studios backlot, Buckinghamshire — The Gotham City streets were built on the studio backlot. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there: A working film studio, not open to the public without a tour booking.

Set in Axis Chemicals — A chemical works used by Gotham's mob as a front.

A real disused power station in north-west London stood in for the plant exterior.

The dining room is the film's big joke about a lonely billionaire.

Set in Flugelheim Museum — A Gotham art museum.

A Gotham institution; the film gives no real-world museum.

The Batcave (1989)

Batman takes Vicki to his hidden base and shows her how the Joker poisons Gotham with mixed products. He asks her to take the facts to the press, and he also wants the film from her camera.

Set in Batcave — Batman's hidden base, full of bats and equipment.

The film does not place the cave on a real map.

Vicki's apartment (1989)

A celebration of Gotham's 200th birthday that the mayor was determined to hold.

Set in Wayne Manor (ending) — The estate again, now as a home.
