Scenes and places

The underground robot fight

Fourteen-year-old Hiro, a robotics prodigy, wins a rigged-looking match with a robot he built himself and angers the crowd. His older brother Tadashi pulls him out just in time, scolding him for wasting his talent on illegal betting.

Set in Underground bot-fighting ring, San Fransokyo — A back-alley betting ring where Hiro hustles robot fights.

The film's opening shows how Hiro uses his talent when nobody is guiding him.

The Hamada family cafe

Aunt Cass scolds Hiro and Tadashi for the night's trouble and for making her close early. Tadashi then tries to push Hiro to use his brain for something real, and offers to take him to the one place he can: his university lab.

Set in Lucky Cat Cafe, the Hamada home — The cafe on the ground floor of the house where Hiro, Tadashi and Aunt Cass live.

A Victorian house with a Japanese makeover, the family's cafe below and the bedrooms above.

Filmed at Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco (Victorian house at Haight St and Masonic Ave) — The production's stated model for the Hamada house is a Victorian house at the corner of Haight Street and Masonic Avenue; the pin is the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood centre, not the house. Filmed at Painted Ladies, Alamo Square, San Francisco — The director says the Victorian row inspired the house, with a cafe put on the bottom of one. Google Maps · Apple Maps

The bridge over San Fransokyo

The bridge frames the Hamada family's neighbourhood and the city that Hiro wants to leave behind for the university.

Set in San Fransokyo bridge — A torii-style version of the Golden Gate Bridge standing beside the cafe.

A reviewer describes it as the Golden Gate crossed with traditional Shinto torii gates.

The nerd school: San Fransokyo Institute of Technology

Tadashi shows Hiro his lab, his friends and his healthcare robot Baymax. Professor Callaghan challenges Hiro to apply, and Hiro decides to enter the school's showcase with his microbots.

Set in San Fransokyo Institute of Technology — Tadashi's university, where Hiro meets Baymax and the lab friends and pitches his microbots at the showcase.

A university campus in a city that blends Californian and Japanese design.

The abandoned warehouse

Hiro is grieving when he accidentally switches on Baymax, and his last surviving microbot starts tugging towards something. Baymax finds where it wants to go, and the pair climb in through a window and find a masked man mass-producing microbots.

Set in Abandoned warehouse near the waterfront — A derelict warehouse where Hiro's last microbot leads him and Baymax.

A hideout with factory machinery, in a city blending San Francisco and Tokyo.

The chase through the hills

Yokai pursues Hiro, Baymax and the lab friends. Baymax gets them out of danger, and Hiro starts to see that the fire was no accident.

Set in Streets and hills of San Fransokyo — A pursuit through the steep streets of the city.

The film exaggerates San Francisco's slopes: its production designer says the hills are about one and a half times as steep.

Fred's family mansion

The friends take cover at Fred's house after the attack. Hiro upgrades Baymax and the group turns their own inventions into gear for fighting Yokai.

Set in Fred's family mansion — The estate belonging to Fred's parents, where the group hides and arms up.

Fred's parents' house is a surprise to the group.

The abandoned Krei Tech laboratory on the island

Believing Yokai to be Alistair Krei, the group tracks him to a remote island. Inside the abandoned lab they discover it was used for teleportation research, and then Yokai ambushes them.

Set in Abandoned Krei Tech laboratory, remote island — A shut-down teleportation research lab on a remote island.

A government-closed facility whose prototype portal once destabilised.
