Divergent (2014)

Where Divergent says it takes place, and where it was really shot.

Future Chicago was built from a church, an empty lot on Wells Street, a few streets of fake L tracks and a film studio, and only the Navy Pier Ferris wheel is the real thing.

Scenes and places

The gray Abnegation street

Beatrice lives in Abnegation, a faction that teaches her never to think of herself, and she is afraid her aptitude test will say she does not belong. The night before the Choosing Ceremony, her father warns that Erudite is trying to discredit Abnegation, and her brother Caleb tells her she must also think of herself.

Set in Abnegation sector — The plain neighbourhood where Beatrice Prior grows up in the faction that runs the government.

A neighbourhood of identical, simple houses, shown as the seat of the faction that governs the city.

The Choosing Ceremony

At the Choosing Ceremony Beatrice has to pick the one faction she will belong to for the rest of her life, with a secret test result that gave no single answer. Her brother Caleb picks Erudite, and she walks to the Dauntless bowl, leaving her family behind.

Set in Choosing Ceremony hall — The hall where every sixteen-year-old publicly picks a faction for life.

A real Christian Science church in downtown Chicago, with the plaza outside used for exterior shots.

Filmed at Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago (Chicago, Illinois (the film's future version of the city), Chicago, United States) — Interior scenes of the Choosing Ceremony were shot in this church on East Wacker Drive. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The run for the L train

Freshly chosen, the new Dauntless sprint to catch a moving train and have to jump aboard. Beatrice makes it and meets Christina, a Candor transfer who will become her first friend.

Set in Downtown L tracks — The elevated train line through the city's centre, the newly chosen Dauntless' way to their new home.

Elevated train tracks, a Chicago landmark that the film keeps in a future version of the city.

The jump into the dark hole

Beatrice and the other transfers must leap from a rooftop into a dark hole, landing in a net below. After no one else steps forward, she goes first, and when asked her name she chooses to be called Tris.

Set in Dauntless entrance rooftop — The roof of a tall building: the only way in to Dauntless is to jump into a dark hole.

An old downtown building used for its rooftop and its rough, industrial texture.

The Pit

Four, the instructor, leads the transfers into the Pit and warns Tris that the first lesson for survival here is to keep her mouth shut. This is where the initiates will live for the next ten weeks.

Set in The Pit, Dauntless headquarters — The huge cavern at the centre of Dauntless where the initiates are shown around.

A huge open cavern of balconies and bridges, built from scratch on a film-studio stage.

The Dauntless dining hall

Tris sits down to her first Dauntless meal with Christina, Al and Will, and has never eaten a hamburger before. Teasing between the former Abnegation, Candor and Erudite members shows how hard it is to leave your old faction behind, while Four's reputation is the talk of the table.

Set in Dauntless dining hall — The noisy canteen where Dauntless eat and the initiates make their first friends.

The basement of an old historic building, dressed as the Dauntless canteen.

Dauntless training

Eric explains that the lowest-ranked initiates will be cut and left to live factionless. Tris starts far behind, is trained by Four, and is eventually matched against her rival Peter in a fight that ends with her in the infirmary.

Set in Dauntless training ground — The warehouse where the initiates train to fight, and where those who rank lowest are cut.

A vacant factory warehouse turned into a fighting ring and training floor.

The tattoo parlour

Christina talks the friends into getting tattoos. In the parlour Tori, who recorded Tris's test result, warns her she made a mistake choosing Dauntless and that people who do not fit a category cannot be controlled.

Set in Initiates' dorm and tattoo parlour — The underground quarters where the initiates sleep, shop and get tattoos.

A basement with the transfer dorm, tunnels, clothing store, tattoo parlour and infirmary.

Capture the Flag on the Ferris wheel

Tris leaves the infirmary to join the game, picks the stiff for her team, and ends up climbing high with Four to find a vantage point. They find the other team's flag and she helps her team win.

Set in Capture the Flag game — The fenced-off game ground where the initiates play Capture the Flag with neuro-stim darts.

A game of Capture the Flag fought with darts that simulate the pain of a gunshot, in a rusted-out amusement area.

Filmed at Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, Chicago (Chicago, Illinois (the film's future version of the city), Chicago, United States) — The Navy Pier Ferris wheel was filmed, and the entire area was treated with dirt and rust to look more dystopian. The coordinate is the pier, not the wheel itself. Google Maps · Apple Maps
