Scenes and places

Two pilots, one island (1944)

Marlow and Ikari, enemy pilots, fall onto the same island and fight hand to hand. A giant ape cuts the fight short. It is the first sign that the island has its own rules.

Set in A South Pacific island (Skull Island) — Two World War II pilots parachute onto an island and fight until a giant ape interrupts.

Skull Island is a fictional island; no real place stands in for it.

Filmed at South Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia — A plane crash scene was shot over the white sand here (the blog does not say which scene of the film). Google Maps · Apple Maps

The bombs that wake the island (1973)

Packard's soldiers drop seismic charges to map the island and test Brooks's Hollow Earth theory. The blasts bring out the giant ape, who scatters the survivors across the island. From here the group splits in two.

Hạ Long Bay's limestone towers rising from the sea supplied much of the film's look, according to one location guide.

The man who has been here since 1944 (1973)

Conrad's group walks into the Iwi people and the much older Marlow. He explains that Kong guards the island from the Skullcrawlers the bombing woke. Together they finish a boat built from the wrecks of two planes.

Set in Iwi village, Skull Island — Conrad's group meets the local Iwi and an older Marlow, who explains Kong and the Skullcrawlers.

A fictional village; a blog guesses the Tràng An visitor center looked like its inspiration, but says nothing about filming there.

The river and the birds (1973)

The group rides Marlow's boat down the river and gets a radio link to Packard's group. Then carnivorous birds attack and tear Nieves apart. The trip shows the island's calm stretches are never safe.

Set in The river, Skull Island — The group rides the boat down the river, where carnivorous birds attack.

A fictional river; the film shot in Ninh Bình province (Tràng An, Vân Long, Tam Cốc) but sources do not link a scene to it.

The graveyard of Kong's family (1973)

Marlow leads Packard's group through a mass grave of dinosaurs and Kong's relatives. A Skullcrawler attacks there and Weaver ignites a gas explosion. Afterward Packard decides to hunt Kong.
