Scenes and places

The wreck and the boy in the water

Elizabeth, a governor's daughter, sails toward a new colony and finds a boy floating among wreckage. She takes a gold medallion from his neck while he is unconscious, then sees a ghostly ship slip away.

Set in Open sea aboard HMS Dauntless — Governor Swann's ship comes upon a burning wreck and pulls a boy from the water.

A stretch of open sea with no fixed place; the film gives it no name.

Elizabeth's corset morning at the governor's mansion

Eight years on, Elizabeth struggles into a fashionable dress her father chose, while Will, now a blacksmith, delivers a sword for the ceremony. The two greet each other with an old joke about her name, and she cannot quite say what she feels.

Set in Governor Swann's mansion, Port Royal — Elizabeth is laced into a tight dress for the day's ceremony while Will delivers a sword to her father.

A governor's house in a fictional-looking colonial Port Royal, rebuilt in California.

Filmed at Manhattan Beach, California — The mansion exterior was built at Manhattan Beach; the point is the city value, not the building. The Rancho Palos Verdes peninsula is named for the outside by another list. Google Maps · Apple Maps

Jack Sparrow sails into Port Royal

Jack Sparrow steps onto the Port Royal dock as his little boat sinks under him. He talks his way past the harbor clerk with a made-up name and a few extra coins.

Set in Port Royal harbor, Jamaica — A pirate captain arrives at the harbor of Port Royal looking for a ship.

A harbor that looks like a Caribbean colony but is a bay on a different island.

How to get there:

The fort, the promotion and the proposal on the cliff

Norrington proposes to Elizabeth on a cliff overlooking the sea, but the corset leaves her short of breath and she falls into the water. Jack dives in to save her, and the medallion she wears gives off a strange pulse.

Set in Fort at Port Royal — Norrington is promoted to commodore and proposes to Elizabeth on a cliff by the fort.

A stone fortress built from scratch on a California headland to stand for Port Royal.

Filmed at Rancho Palos Verdes, California — The Port Royal fortress was built here in October 2002; the coordinate is the city centre, not the set site. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The Black Pearl raids Port Royal

Night falls and cannon fire hits the town; pirates search the streets for the gold that calls to them. Elizabeth gives the name Turner and invokes the right of parley to be taken to their captain, and is carried off to the Black Pearl.

Set in Port Royal at night — The Black Pearl's crew storms Port Royal in the night, looking for the medallion, and takes Elizabeth.

A harbor town shelled in the dark by a ship nobody has seen in daylight.

Filmed at Marineland of the Pacific, Rancho Palos Verdes — A German-language article says a facade that could be set on fire was built here; it does not state that this was the raid scene, so the link is inferred. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

Tortuga, where Jack gets a crew

Jack and Will bring the stolen ship to the pirate port to find a crew. On the way, Jack tells Will that his father was known to pirates as Bootstrap.

Set in Tortuga — Jack and Will sail to Tortuga to find a crew and learn who Jack used to be.

A pirate town so rough that Jack says no man would feel unwanted there.

Filmed at Wallilabou Bay, Saint Vincent — The same bay served as Tortuga; the built piers and backlot were reused for both ports. Google Maps · Apple Maps

A hidden island with a cave that exists only on a soundstage.

The Pearl chases the Interceptor
