Scenes and places

The standoff that costs Will his leg (2018)

Will, a Marine veteran leading an FBI hostage rescue team, goes in with his colleague Ben. The suicide bomb they meet there costs Will his left leg, and it sets up why he later works as a private security consultant.

Set in Minnesota, USA — A US hostage standoff ten years before the main story, where Will's FBI team goes in.

The film opens in the American Midwest, far from the Hong Kong tower it is named for.

The Pearl and the security briefing (2018)

Ten years later Will arrives at the Pearl to check its fire and security systems. He meets its owner Zhao, the security director and the insurance underwriter, and Zhao hands him a tablet that controls the whole building.

Set in The Pearl, Hong Kong — A 225-floor skyscraper, the tallest in the world, invented for the film. The film's own setting puts it where the Hong Kong Cultural Centre stands.

A fictional tower set on the Kowloon waterfront; the real filming of it was mostly done on a stage in Vancouver.

Filmed at Hong Kong Cultural Centre — One of the places in Hong Kong where location shooting took place; the page names the Cultural Centre but not which scenes. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The ferry to the security centre (2018)

Will and Ben head across the harbour to inspect the Pearl's last system. A mugger goes for Will's bag, and then Ben turns on him for the tablet.

Set in Remote security centre across the harbour — The offsite building that runs the Pearl's safety systems, reached by a trip across the water.

The Chinese Wikipedia plot has the pair crossing by ferry; the English one just says they head to the offsite facility.

Fire on the 96th floor (2018)

Botha's men start a fire on the 96th floor with a water-reactive chemical. Everything above it is sealed off, and Will's wife and children are in the upper section.

Set in The Pearl, 96th floor — The residential floors of the fictional tower, where the fire starts and cuts off the upper 130 floors.

Floor 96 is the line the whole rescue has to cross.

Running from the police (2018)

Framed for the attack, Will runs from Inspector Wu's team through the city. He has to reach the Pearl without being caught.

Set in Streets of Hong Kong — The city streets Will crosses as the police try to arrest him.

The street scenes are Hong Kong in the story, but a Vancouver trade article says downtown Vancouver stood in for it.

The crane next to the Pearl (2018)

Will climbs the crane of a neighbouring building site. He jumps from it into the burning tower to get above the fire barrier.

Set in Construction site beside the Pearl — A building site next to the tower with a crane tall enough to reach the Pearl.

The film's best-known stunt.

The Central Piers building site (2018)

Sarah works out that Botha's men plan to escape by parachute. She joins Inspector Wu at the piers, where she gets Will's tablet back from Xia.

Set in Central Piers building site — A building site by the Central ferry piers on Hong Kong Island, named in the Chinese plot as the place the villains are expected to land by parachute. Google Maps · Apple Maps

The site is across the harbour from the Pearl.

Climbing the outside of the Pearl (2018)

Will has to scale the outside of the building to reach the security panel for Zhao's penthouse. His daughter is in Botha's hands, so he cannot stop.

Set in The Pearl, outer wall — The glass outer wall of the fictional tower, high above the harbour.

A set built in Vancouver and extended by visual effects.
