Todd takes the alias Sweeney Todd and goes back to his old shop above Mrs. Lovett's pie shop. She tells him what became of his wife and daughter, and he vows revenge, reopening the shop with his old razors.

Anthony hears Johanna singing at a window above the street and falls for her. Judge Turpin's henchman Beadle Bamford has him thrown out and beaten, but Anthony vows to come back and rescue her.

Rival barber and snake oil seller Adolfo Pirelli is publicly humiliated by Todd at a shaving contest in front of Bamford. It brings Todd to the Beadle's notice and later leads Pirelli to recognise his razors.
