Yinniang arrives in Weibo, sent by her master to kill her cousin and former betrothed, the governor Tian Ji'an. Court meetings and banquets in his compound set up the politics she has walked into.

Lady Nie Tian tells Yinniang how the childhood betrothal to Tian Ji'an came about and was cancelled for a politically pressing marriage. Yinniang struggles with her mission, most of all in front of his children.

Tian Xing is demoted and sent to Linqing under the protection of Nie Feng, Yinniang's father. They are ambushed on the way, and Yinniang arrives in time to rescue them.

Jiaxin, a nun who raised Yinniang from the age of ten, sets her a ruthless test of resolve after Yinniang shows mercy. The cliff-side temple is where that training is rooted.
