Scenes and places

Taken to the General's castle (1811)

Two travelling con men are hauled in by the Italian torturer Cavaldi and brought before a French general. Their fake exorcisms have caught up with them, and the price of freedom is a real case.

Set in General Delatombe's castle — The castle where the French general holds the arrested brothers; its place in Germany is not named in the film.

A hilltop castle in the Bohemian Paradise that the film dresses as a German seat of power.

Filmed at Kost Castle, Český ráj — Kost serves as the exterior of the general's castle where the brothers are taken after they are arrested. Google Maps · Apple Maps

The village that lost its girls (1811)

The brothers arrive in Marbaden promising to find the missing girls. Frightened villagers blame the forest, and the only guide is the trapper Angelika, whom everyone calls cursed.

Set in Marbaden — A village in the German countryside where several young girls have vanished.

A made-up village with no real German address; the film raised it on a studio backlot.

Filmed at Barrandov Studios outdoor set, Prague — A sprawling village and forest were built on the Barrandov grounds for the film; the sources do not say outright that this village is Marbaden. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The living forest chase (1811)

Angelika leads the brothers through the woods to an old ruin and a tower no one can enter. That night a horse swallows a girl whole and bolts, and the chase turns the forest itself into the enemy.

Set in The enchanted forest near Marbaden — A dark forest near the village, said to be alive, where a horse carries a girl away.

A forest that was largely built, then burned, on a Prague studio ground.

Filmed at Barrandov forest set and forests of the Beroun region — A forest was built at Barrandov and burned for the film; the Czech article also mentions forests in the Beroun region, without naming which scene was shot where. Google Maps · Apple Maps

Interrogated by the general (1811)

Back before the general, the brothers say what they saw: a forest that attacked. He does not buy it, and Cavaldi stages a torture lesson. They talk their way out by offering a more convenient culprit.

Set in General Delatombe's castle (interior) — The vaulted rooms of the general's castle where the brothers are questioned.

A medieval royal castle west of Prague with a long record as a film set.

Filmed at Křivoklát Castle, vaulted rooms — Interiors of vaulted rooms at Křivoklát are where the interrogation of the brothers was filmed. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

The Queen's chamber in the tower (1811)

Jake climbs the tower and finds the Queen, who is old and still alive. Her mirror shows her young again, and he is nearly drawn in.

Set in The tower in the forest — A tall tower, built centuries ago by a vain queen, with no door at the bottom.

A fairy-tale tower that exists only as film sets, in two versions.

Filmed at Barrandov Studios, Queen's chamber sets — The Queen's chamber inside the tower was built by the Art Department as two sets; the studio location is taken from the Barrandov filming described in the sources. Google Maps · Apple Maps
