Scenes and places

Three strangers arrive at the darkened house (1945)

Grace Stewart keeps her light-sensitive children, Anne and Nicholas, in a house sealed behind heavy curtains. Bertha Mills, Edmund Tuttle and the mute Lydia arrive asking for work, and Grace hires them as housekeeper, gardener and maid. They tell her they worked in the house years earlier.

Set in The remote house on Jersey — The isolated country house on Jersey where almost the whole film takes place.

Palacio de los Hornillos in Cantabria stands in for the Jersey house; the story itself is set on Jersey, a Channel Island, in 1945.

How to get there:

The album in the storage room (1945)

After Anne says a boy named Victor and his family visit her, Grace hears footsteps and voices and orders a search of the house. In a storage room she finds a nineteenth-century album of photographs of corpses. Mrs Mills explains that many people left the house in 1891 after a tuberculosis outbreak.

The piano that plays itself (1945)

Grace witnesses a piano playing itself and becomes convinced that the house is haunted. She runs outside to find the local priest to bless the house, and sends Tuttle to check the gardens for a buried family.

A man in the woods (1945)

Searching for the priest, Grace runs into her husband, Charles, whom she believed killed in World War II. She brings him back to the house, where he later tells her he must return to the front and leaves the next morning.

Woodland near the house; the film gives the island setting its fog and isolation.

The curtains come down (1945)

Grace finds that every curtain in the house has been removed, leaving Anne and Nicholas exposed to sunlight. She accuses the servants and expels them from the house.

Heavy curtains are the house's main defence; the children's rare condition rules out any daylight.
