Andy arrives at Shawshank in 1947 with the other new inmates. He is met by the warden and the guards, and Red takes bets on which fish will cry first.

Life in the cellblock

Andy settles into prison routine. Red, who can get anything, supplies him with a rock hammer and a poster of Rita Hayworth.

Music over the prison yard

A crate of donated records arrives at the library. Andy locks himself in and plays an aria over the whole prison, and every man stops to listen.
