Seeking refuge in a vehicle called the Scuttlebug, Tom and Hester are locked in a cell by owners who plan to sell them as slaves. In the cell Hester tells Tom why she wants Valentine dead.

Rustwater slave market

At the slave market, Anti-Traction League agent Anna Fang rescues Tom and Hester. In the fight Shrike goes after Hester.

Back in London, Katherine drifts from her father after Bevis tells her Valentine pushed Tom down the chute. They start to suspect the energy project in St Paul's is more than it seems.

Anna flies Tom and Hester to Airhaven on her airship. Tom works out that Hester's mother found part of a superweapon called MEDUSA.
