Scenes and places

The Kobayashi Maru simulator (2285)

Lieutenant Saavik commands a simulated Enterprise on a rescue mission to the damaged ship Kobayashi Maru. Klingon cruisers attack and cripple her. Admiral Kirk watches the whole test.

Set in Starfleet Academy bridge simulator — A simulated starship bridge where trainees face a no-win rescue test.

A training simulation, not a real place; filmed on a redressed bridge set.

Ceti Alpha V, Khan's desert prison (2285)

Reliant's first officer Chekov and Captain Terrell beam down to a planet they think is Ceti Alpha VI. They are captured by Khan, who explains this is Ceti Alpha V, where Kirk exiled him.

Set in Ceti Alpha V — A desert wasteland planet where Khan and his followers were exiled fifteen years earlier.

Its orbit shifted when a neighbouring planet exploded, turning it into a wasteland.

Filmed at Paramount Pictures studio lot, Hollywood, Los Angeles — The desert surface of Ceti Alpha V was built inside Stage 8, the largest sound stage on this lot. The point is the whole lot, not the stage. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

Regula I and the Genesis lab (2285)

Khan attacks the station to take the Genesis Device. Kirk, McCoy and Saavik beam over and find Terrell and Chekov alive and Carol Marcus's team slaughtered.

Set in Regula I — A space station orbiting a planetoid, where Dr. Carol Marcus's team develops the Genesis Device.

Studio model and redressed sets: the station is the Motion Picture office complex inverted.

The Mutara Nebula duel (2285)

Kirk leads Khan into the nebula, where shields fail and targeting is compromised. Spock notes Khan's inexperience in three-dimensional combat, and Kirk uses it to disable Reliant.

Set in Mutara Nebula — A gas cloud that blinds shields and targeting, leaving Enterprise and Reliant evenly matched.

No real location: the ship miniatures were filmed on a blue screen and composited with nebula backgrounds.

The engine room (2285)

With the warp drive damaged, Spock goes to the engine room to restore power. McCoy tries to stop him, and Spock tells him to "remember".

Set in Enterprise engine room — The ship's irradiated engine room, where warp power must be restored.

A studio set; the film's emotional turning point happens aboard the ship, not at any planet.

The Genesis planet and the casket (2285)

The crew holds a space burial. The casket lands on the new planet, shown in the film as a lush corner of grass.

Set in The Genesis planet — A new planet formed by the Genesis explosion where the casket comes to rest.

The planet is fictional; the lush ground was a real overgrown corner of a city park.

Filmed at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco — The closing casket scene was shot in an overgrown corner of this park, with smoke machines adding atmosphere. The exact corner is not recorded; the point is the park. Google Maps · Apple Maps
