Scenes and places

Class B is chosen for the game (2000)

A Japanese law sends one junior high class a year into a deadly game. Shuya Nanahara, still struggling with his father's suicide, is about to be swept in with his classmates.

Set in Shiroiwa Junior High School, Class B (Kagawa) — The class of 9th-graders picked for this year's Battle Royale; the school is a story setting, not a real building.

A fictional school in Kagawa Prefecture; the film names the school but no filming place for these scenes is recorded.

The class wakes on a deserted island (2000)

The class falls asleep on a school bus and wakes up on a remote island. Nobody knows yet why they are there.

Set in The deserted island (about 10 km across, film's own figure) — A remote island emptied of residents; the students wake there after being gassed on their school bus.

In the story the island is a nameless, evacuated stretch of coast and hills; the film does not place it on a map.

Filmed at Hachijo-kojima, Izu Islands, Tokyo — The main location for the island scenes; the point is the island's centre, not one scene. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there: The island has been uninhabited for decades and has no regular boat service; Japanese Wikipedia says cast and crew were flown in from Hachijo-jima by helicopter.

Kitano explains the rules in the island school (2000)

Kitano tells the class they have three days to fight to the death, hands out a bag with a random weapon, and shows that the explosive collars are real. Shuya watches his classmates realise this is not a joke.

Set in The island's school building (the game's headquarters) — A disused school building on the island where Kitano briefs the class and the game is run.

In the story a former school now serves as the game's headquarters.

Filmed at Onishi, Fujioka (former Onishi town), Gunma — Japanese Wikipedia lists the former town of Onishi (Gunma) as the location for the island's school building; the point is the old town centre, not the school. Google Maps · Apple Maps

Within six hours twelve students are dead, four by suicide. Mitsuko Souma and Kazuo Kiriyama stand out as the most ruthless players.

Set in The island's mountain slopes — Wooded hills of the island where students hide, flee and meet on the first day.

The film keeps the island's geography vague; these slopes are only 'the mountain'.

Filmed at Gotemba, Shizuoka — Japanese Wikipedia lists Gotemba city as the location for the mountain scenes in which Oki and Motobuchi die and for the scenes of Chigusa, Mitsuko and Niida; the point is the city centre. Google Maps · Apple Maps

The ruin where Mitsuko is cornered (2000)

Classmates accuse Mitsuko of earlier killings, and the argument turns violent. It shows why she is one of the game's most ruthless players.

Set in A ruined building on the island — An abandoned building where Mitsuko is accused of earlier killings.

A ruined building on the island, away from the main paths.

Filmed at Onishi, Fujioka (former Onishi town), Gunma — Japanese Wikipedia lists the former town of Onishi as the location of the ruin where Mitsuko kills Megumi and Shimizu; same area as the school building. Google Maps · Apple Maps

How to get there:

Mimura's hideout in the ruins (2000)

Mimura recruits classmates to hack the game's computer system. It is the one plan that tries to end the game rather than win it.

Set in A ruin where Mimura's group hides — An abandoned site where Mimura's group plans to hack the game's computer system.

A hideout of crumbling buildings away from the danger zones.

The lighthouse where Shuya wakes (2000)

Shuya wakes bandaged in a lighthouse where Yukie Utsumi and five other girls have sworn not to take part in the game. He learns Sugimura carried him there.

Set in The island's lighthouse — A lighthouse where a group of girls shelter and where Shuya recovers.

A working lighthouse on a Miura peninsula cape stands in for the island's lighthouse.

How to get there:

The base and the hacking attempt (2000)

Mimura and two others break into the game's computer system, but Kitano resets it by hand. The plan to stop the game is on a clock.
